New Cookbook Serves Up Delicious Tastes of Killington

Cooking has taken a whole new direction inTastes of Killington: Recipes from Killington's Finest Restaurants by Carol Ehmann. This user-friendly cookbook features information and recipes from Killington area restaurants and is designed to be interactive, inviting readers to contact the chefs as they try out the book's recipes.

Tastes of Killington restaurants eagerly await questions and thoughtful comments from readers. Each restaurant has its own chapter, which begins with a full page of information about the restaurant followed by several pages of recipes representative of its cuisine. Each chapter closes with location information, including website, phone numbers, and street and mailing addresses.

Tastes of Killington is modeled after an Aspen-based cookbook by Ehmann's friend Jill Sheeley, whose book has been so successful it is in its third printing of the sixth edition.

The book is beautifully illustrated with pen and ink drawings of each restaurant by longtime local resident Peter Gould.Tastes of Killington restaurants will be offered a line of products for resale, including full-sized reproductions, through DesignWorks of Rutland.

Tastes of Killington retails at $19.95 and is being sold at the restaurants in the cookbook and retail outlets in Killington and Mendon. Local non-profit organizations will also use the book as a fundraiser. The book will be distributed locally, throughout the state of Vermont and ultimately New England.

Tastes of Killington Cookbook Features Area Restaurants, Doubles as Chamber Promotion

The Golden Birch Press was created by Carol Ehmann, who was inspired to publish a cookbook of recipes contributed by Killington area chefs. "This is our first publication, and we hope there will be more," said Ehmann. Tastes of Killington, is patterned after one produced by her friend in Aspen, Co., where it was a success to the point of going into its third printing of the sixth edition. Using the Aspen formula, Ehmann's group went to work on their own cookbook; it will be out this fall. "It will represent Killington area restaurants including those on the Killington Road and east along Route 4 to the Corners Restaurant and Inn in Bridgewater, north on Route 100 to Pittsfield, and west to the Countryman's Pleasure," Ehmann said. The latter restaurant is in Rutland Town, just off Route 4 on Town Line Road.

Each restaurant will have its own chapter, beginning with an introduction to the dining establishment and its chefs, whose recipes will follow. A glossary of cooking terms is included for beginners who don't know what's involved when a recipe calls for braising, for instance. Gerd Hirschmann will confer with the chefs and add suggested wines to go with their entrees. Hirschmann has the requisite expertise in wines, notes Ehmann--he is a former waiter at Hemingway's Restaurant and works for a Vermont wine distributor.

Every menu category will be included from appetizers to desserts. What's most unusual, Ehmann points out, is the opportunity for readers to log onto the website for the chef's e-mail addresses and send them a call for help or to make comments. If the dish doesn't turn out just right, they can ask for a chef's advice.

The book is designed to be multi-faceted in its appeal to readers who always wanted to know what's in a favorite dish from this or that restaurant and how to cook it, as well as those who may not be acquainted with all of the great dining opportunities in this area. And it will serve as a major marketing tool for the Killington Chamber of Commerce; they will take it to shows and feature it in promotional materials for years to come. The forward was written by Chamber of Commerce president Bill Vines.

The project has grown to become a townwide effort. Ehmann marvels at the way this project brought together dozens of talented people in the community to "put 150 percent into it--put their best foot forward", she said.

Nonprofit groups will be offered the book to sell for their benefit. In addition to the Chamber of commerce, Ehmann mentioned the Killington Rotary Club and the Volunteer Fire Department, the Sherburne Library and Nursery School. She will offer it to local retail outlets and eventually to the New England market.

The illustrator is Killington artist Peter Gould. His pen-and-ink drawings will grace the book throughout, and his cover design will be a water color painting that the Chamber of Commerce in its promotions will make familiar to everyone everywhere. It's a view of the entire Killington Mountain area seen through a window, with a dining couple in the foreground. The window frame is the border for the cover. The design layout is by Nanette Campbell of DesignWorks in Rutland.

The price of the 200-page volume is $19.95. There will be an order form in the book to use for ordering more copies.
